An American connoisseur I know in London assures me that a healthy, plump, year-old infant is the most delicious, nutritious, and healthy food, whether boiled, roasted, grilled, or cooked in a pot, and I have no doubt that it can also be served as a stew or fricassee. Therefore, I humbly submit to the hearing of all my proposal that out of the one hundred twenty thousand children we have already counted, twenty thousand should be set aside for breeding, of which only one quarter should be male, a percentage greater than what we allow for sheep, cattle, and pigs.
That the remaining one hundred thousand infants, once they reach a year, should be offered for sale to the good and wealthy people throughout the kingdom, always advising the mother to let them nurse plenty of milk in the last month so that they become plump and fat, just right for a good dinner table.
The "Modest Proposal" was written at the end of the summer of 1729. It was printed and published by Mrs. Harding in October of the same year. It represents the satirical counterpart to Swift's straightforward social and political commentary on the miseries of Ireland. Swift had now fully realized that there could be no political solution to the twisted and irrevocable hostilities in Ireland. His proposal is a scathing affront to the political entity of the Anglo-Irish, while the author's sympathy extends only to the native Irish and is imbued with a sense of shared humanity and hatred against tyranny.
The "Modest Proposal" constitutes a clever and insightful blow to the English reader, as well as to any hypocritical reader of any time and society, whose sluggish, complacent reflexes are brutally mutilated by the wit of cannibalism.
