On June 13, 1844, Kierkegaard published Philosophical Fragments or Syllogisms and Remnants under the pseudonym John of the Ladder. He borrows the title from Hippias Major of Plato (fragments it is, and remnants of discourse, divided briefly).
This short and obscure work discusses the concepts of truth and knowledge, as well as whether they can be taught, in ancient Greeks and Christianity, comparing Socrates with Christ.
The reactions provoked by this work forced the author to publish, two years later, the Final Non-Scientific Postscript to the Philosophical Fragments, a much more extensive and significant work.
