Extension tubes are designed to allow a lens to focus closer than its normal minimum focusing distance. The closer shot results in magnification of the subject, making it appear larger in your viewfinder and photographs. They are extremely useful for macro photography, allowing you to turn almost any lens into a macro lens at a low cost, while maintaining the original optical quality.
The DG extension tubes do not contain optical elements. They mount between the camera body and the lens to create a greater distance between the lens and the film plane. By moving the lens further away from the camera's film or CCD sensor, the lens is forced to focus much closer than normal. The longer the extension tube, the closer the lens can focus.
