Description & Specifications

Recently we have witnessed the movement to topple statues and busts that depict historical figures associated with slavery. These removals have been linked to the protests of the Black Lives Matter movement. The act of dismantling brings to the forefront the relationship between memory and space, the meanings produced within the space in relation to specific material monuments. It also highlights the relationships that specific groups develop with the past, in given circumstances of the present. The past is subject to different uses and becomes a matter of claim by different groups, such as the dismantling of monuments that was seen as a restoration of the historical injustice represented by slavery. Such issues lie at the core of public history, a field where practices and discourses about the past intersect, expressed by different groups and institutions. The relationship between public history and memory, as well as academic history, which views the management of aspects of the past with skepticism, emerges. An introductory presentation of public history and the ways of understanding it, which this volume attempts to provide, is deemed necessary.
