Description & Specifications

This study reflects an effort for a comprehensive analysis and evaluation of the new Amsterdam Treaty, the negotiations that led to its formulation during the Intergovernmental Conference 1996-1997, as well as the potential consequences for the future direction and organizational model of both the European Union and Greece.

It also attempts to formulate alternative proposals for the interpretation of the new Treaty, taking into account newer interpretative approaches for the process of European integration, as well as the new elements that the Treaty contributes to the logic of integration. Finally, it examines, with an effort at theoretical formulation, Greece's role in the revision process and in the drafting of the new Treaty.

Particularly, the new provisions of the Treaty for the establishment of an area of security, justice, and freedom are examined, the key sections for the protection of fundamental rights, as well as the provisions for asylum, migration, and the free movement of persons, the abolition of discrimination, the communitization of the Schengen acquis. The provisions for enhancing the role of the citizen are also examined with an analysis of the new regulations regarding employment, social policy, the enhancement of other common policies of the Union, the principles of subsidiarity and transparency, the new provisions for common foreign and security policy, and the regulations for the institutional framework of the CFSP.

A special chapter is dedicated to the reform of the institutions of the European Union, while another chapter is entirely dedicated to examining the new regulations for flexibility-closer cooperation. Lastly, a separate chapter is devoted to the Amsterdam Treaty and Greece, in which Greece’s positions and strategy in the revision process are analyzed, its contribution to the drafting of the new Treaty, as well as the contradictions and dilemmas of Greek European policy.
