This memorandum aims to leverage the progress and evolution of international scientific research, highlighting aspects of the rhetorical text that have not yet been extensively discussed and adequately evaluated in the Greek-language literature. Beyond the traditionally established characteristics of a memorandum—namely, a comprehensive and detailed introduction accompanied by a translation of the ancient Greek original—this memorandum emphasizes the commentary on the text in light of the findings of contemporary international research, with the goal of showcasing the meticulous construction of the texts and the rhetorical skill of their authors. Our goal is for the research-renewed analysis of the speeches to assist scholars of rhetoric in familiarizing themselves with international research and, using concepts and research tools that this memorandum elucidates, to carve new paths for the scientific study and teaching of the masterpieces of Attic rhetoric.
It is fortunate that we have a wide range of sources regarding the historical figure, life, and works of Lysias. The preserved testimonies agree that Lysias, whose father was the Syracusan Cephalus and grandfather was Lysandrus, was born in Athens, probably in 445 B.C. According to Cicero (Brutus 48), Lysias began his involvement with rhetoric as a rhetorical teacher. However, he soon devoted himself to the profession of logographer, meaning the author of speeches, which was one of the lucrative occupations of that time. Lysias was extremely prolific: he composed 425 speeches, of which only 233 are considered authentic today, although the Suda states that his genuine speeches were over 300. As of today, only 34 of Lysias's speeches have survived in textual form, some are not even preserved in full, while the authenticity of others is disputed. Dionysius of Halicarnassus characterizes Lysias as "the best standard of the Attic language" (Lysias 11: the best standard of Attic speech). The praise he attributes to him relates to his ability to vividly depict characters, to impart grace and liveliness to his speech through his sometimes humorous, sometimes ironic, often risqué, scandalous, or provocative yet skillfully crafted and vivid narrative.
Andreas Serafeim is a distinguished graduate of the Department of Classical Studies and Philosophy at the University of Cyprus (B.A. 2008), holder of a master's degree from the University of Texas at Austin (M.A. 2010), and received a Ph.D. from University College London (Ph.D. 2013). He has held various research and teaching positions at universities in Cyprus and abroad: University of Cyprus, Open University of Cyprus, Trinity College Dublin, and University College London. He is an elected and appointed Researcher III at the Research Centre for Greek and Latin Literature of the Academy of Athens. Notable characteristics that distinguish his research activity thus far are the breadth of themes and its interdisciplinary nature. Both his published and ongoing research encompasses a variety of scientific fields, thematic areas, and approaches: ancient Greek rhetoric, ancient law, performance, ancient religion, reception of rhetorical texts in the post-classical and contemporary world, various theoretical approaches (e.g., humor, gender and sexuality theories), as well as ancient Greek prose in general (mainly historiography).
