In November 1942, Turkey imposed a head tax, the Varlık (property tax). This unbearable tax was imposed by the then Turkish government (Inönü - Saracoglu) with blatant bias against the non-Muslim population (Greeks, Armenians, and Jews).
Those among them who could not pay this extortionate tax were sent to labor battalions in the interior of Turkey (Erzurum). This documentary, based on the diary testimony of Konstantinos Kiourktsoglou, records - for the first time in history - the true dimensions of this painful experience.
