Description & Specifications

What defines a groundbreaking, innovative, radically creative cinema? Can a cinematic genre that serves specific goals transcend the restrictions imposed by its practicality and elevate itself to something truly extraordinary? Pinku eiga films, a genre that originated in 1960s Japan and continues to survive and evolve today, demonstrate that true art can flourish even in the cinematic realm of instincts and carnal desire.

Labeling pinku eiga films as pornography may seem justified regarding their intentions, but it grossly undermines the outcome and their transcendent nature, which leads them far beyond the immediate gratification of their viewers, which is the primary goal of Western pornography. While erotic content may be the catalyst, pinku eiga films did not start as pornography but as a form of resistance against a stiflingly conservative and oppressive political and social environment.

They provided an opportunity for underground directors to infiltrate the cinematic mainstream and helped new Japanese cinema to mature through their innovative language, imaginative creativity, and questioning of every taboo or prevailing opinion regarding both cinema and eroticism. Directors of the genre met or collaborated with figures we now recognize as emblematic creators of world cinema, such as Akira Kurosawa, Nagisa Oshima, Seijun Suzuki, and Shohei Imamura.

The imagery of pinku eiga films is unlike anything we have come to recognize as erotic cinema. Their stories are often social allegories, their shots extracted from a feverish imagination that cares more about stimulating the senses and the spirit than the body. This tribute to such a unique and particular cinematic genre presents an ideal opportunity to explore a truly different facet of cinematic creation and, above all, to reaffirm once again the fact that genuinely great and avant-garde art can be born and flourish even in areas that could not seem more remote and disconnected from it.
