The belated discovery that the ecology of the earth would not support an unlimited expansion of productive forces delivers the final blow to the belief in progress. It is now clear that a more equitable distribution of wealth simultaneously requires a drastic decrease in the standard of living enjoyed by wealthy nations and privileged classes. Western nations can no longer project their standard of living and the enlightened, critical, and progressive culture closely associated with it as an example for the rest of the world.
