Fifteenth of December. It’s my birthday. I’m turning ten. My favorite uncle and godfather, Platon Sotiriou, brought me a gift, a book. I still have that book. It’s the only one that survived my many wanderings, and a reckless hand has carelessly colored the black-and-white engravings. Neither my sister nor I are the culprits. Because, no matter how many times each of us read it over fifty times, we took good care of it. However, we often lent it out. It was the first time I found in a book children who were real like us, with their mischief, their relationships with each other, and their relationships with adults exactly as we lived them. When my sister read the book too, we started to play it out. I was Pouloudia, she was Antonis, and various dolls or figures we made from paper represented the other characters. We even created new scenes from our own life. Perhaps no author could write a book with heroes who are truly children, speaking and behaving like real children. But Delta succeeded, and she was unique. Trelantonis and his siblings, the Magas, and the children around him are living children of their time, with their joys and sorrows, their games and mischief, and above all, their relationship with adults shows how different the world of children is and how little adults understand it. Real children – that is the great legacy that Delta left to children with her novels, and to us as writers to create children’s books with children so real as if they had truly existed. Trelantonis, the book that has known successive editions since 1932 and has been loved by all generations of Greek children, describes the holidays of the four Benakis siblings at their uncles’ house in Kallithea, Piraeus. This new, completed edition includes an afterword by the author Alki Zei and a timeline by Al. P. Zanna, which mentions important events in the life of Penelope Delta, as well as events of political, social, and intellectual life in Greece and the world.
