Description

In the above draft, taken from publications of poems, short stories, articles, reviews, and translations by Tsirka, I note only that I deemed it necessary for the outline of his intellectual journey to be presented, to provide the aesthetic and political imprint, especially during the difficult years, such as those of the war and the last dictatorship, the relationship with people and things.

From the studies on Kavafis, which were initially published in magazines, but have been included in the two Kavafis volumes, I mention only the first. Additionally, pre-publications, re-publications, Greek and foreign, and translations of his texts in foreign publications are not recorded. I only mention the actual reprints and not the successive printings of his books.

Finally, it was not possible to include criticisms of his work and studies related to it. Thus, the image of its reception, and above all the conflicts and fermentations it provoked, is not formed. Many texts by Tsirka himself, especially those related to Kavafis, silently or explicitly respond to objections from other scholars.

I can only refer to Katina Plassara's work "Stratis Tsirkas, Bibliography 1926-1978," Greek Literary and Historical Archive, 1979, which was also a valuable aid for me.

In addition to the information I gathered from autobiographical notes of Tsirka, published writings, diaries, interviews, etc., I also used some elements from unpublished material in his archive. The help and support of his wife Antigoni Chatzandreou, and his sister Alexandras Maloukatos, who endured my exhaustive inquiries without complaint, were decisive. I sincerely thank them, as well as those Egyptian companions of Tsirka who kindly provided me with information about his activities during those years.
