The post-classical Peloponnese lost its ancient historical significance and glory, while during the Roman period it fell into the status of a secondary province and ceased to engage the historians of the time.
References to the Peloponnese during the early Byzantine period are essentially limited to mentions of the Hunnic and Gothic invasions. What is certain is that after the invasions, a period of peace ensued, during which profound social and economic changes took place, of which we know very little due to the silence of the sources.
Nevertheless, the information for this period is infinitely better than for the subsequent one, the period of the Dark Ages and further on, until the Frankish and Venetian domination. This period of medieval Peloponnese is the subject of the studies included in this volume.
Undoubtedly, the collection of articles and small studies is not the ideal method for a historical approach to an area or a period. However, it has the advantage of a methodical, deep, and thorough approach to certain characteristic events or actions that illuminate the surrounding historical reality.
In this sense, this volume may serve as a motivation and stimulus for the study of any historical gaps. With this hope, we present it to the book-loving and history-loving audience.
