The title of the book, according to the earlier codices and the earliest testimonies of ecclesiastical writers, has always been "Acts of the Apostles" or "Acts" or rarely with the article "The Acts," in Latin "Acta" and more commonly "Actus Apostolorum."
This title, especially without the article, sufficiently reflects the content of the book, in which a selection and a sort of anthology of acts is presented, through which the apostles contributed to the establishment and expansion of the Church. We do not have in it the history of all the Apostles.
But neither is all the action of the two leading figures of the apostolic group, around whom the entire history of the Acts is woven, narrated in this book. It simply and only follows in broad strokes the actions of Peter and Paul, particularly the establishment of the new faith in Jerusalem and its subsequent initiation and journey and expansion throughout Palestine and the Gentile world until it was proclaimed by Paul in the cosmopolitan Rome.
Unanimously, ecclesiastical antiquity attests to the book of Acts attributing it to the evangelist Luke. The first explicit testimony regarding this is found in the Muratori canon, and after this comes the testimony of Irenaeus, who does not merely testify that the author of the Acts is Luke, but also uses the book, citing about fifty passages from it, some of which he explicitly attributes to Luke.
