Description

One year after the terrorist attack on the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, the Maragkopoulos Foundation for Human Rights (IMDHA) published a collective volume on the sensitive issue of journalists' and cartoonists' freedom of expression.

It includes ten studies that address the contemporary challenges to protecting free expression in a period where it is threatened and attacked not only by all kinds of fanaticism, intolerance, and religious fundamentalism but also by anti-terrorism measures taken by governments.

The volume examines various aspects of the legal framework for the protection of the right to freedom of expression and its limitations, both within Greek and Cypriot law and through the lens of the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights.

Special emphasis is given to the complex yet always relevant issue of the relationship between freedom of expression and religious freedom. The volume is prefaced by French international law professor Emmanuel Decaux, Chair of the United Nations Committee on Enforced Disappearances.
