Description

"With the appearance of the God-man in our earthly world," writes the contemporary Serbian saint Justin Popović, "all divine energies were given to the human race, so that it could live its divine-human life on this planet called Earth. These divine energies and powers... are particularly strong, all-powerful, in the personalities of the holy people of God, such as the holy Apostles, the holy Martyrs, the holy Fathers, and all the holy Confessors of the name of the Lord."

Indeed, the divine energies and powers were all-powerful, with which the Lord graced the venerable Niphon, bishop of Constantiana "of Alexandria" (4th century).

After a troubled and dissolute youth, he deeply repented, pleased God with harsh ascetic practices, spiritual struggles, and a virtuous life, was deemed worthy of divine gifts and revelations, and finally was ordained bishop of Constantiana in Egypt, where he distinguished himself for his saintly pastoral care.

His state and work were recognized "by his inclusion in the choir of saints of the apostolic Alexandrian Church, from whose diptychs, due to temporal circumstances, he fell and was forgotten and obscured." Thus, he is not mentioned in the Menaion or the Synaxarion.

However, his life has been preserved in many Greek codices. Moreover, its translation into the Slavonic language made him so popular in the Slavic Orthodox world that, as admitted by the Soviet professor P.O. Potapov, "it holds the first place among those works that shaped the religious consciousness of the people."
