In his endless odes to the female form, Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920) captured elongated bodies, almond-shaped eyes, and his name in the history of art. His lethargic female figures are as immediately recognizable as they are striking, sensual, and with swan-like necks. His unique depiction draws from his personal idea of beauty, though he was influenced by a rich variety of visual influences, including contemporary Cubism, African sculptures, Cambodian sculptures, and 13th-century painting from his homeland of Italy. Although he is best known for his nudes, he applied similar stylistic techniques to portraits of artistic contemporaries such as Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau, and Chaïm Soutine. With key works from his highly personal repertoire, this book introduces Modigliani's short but famous career at the heart of early modernism in Paris.
