Studying his theories and thousands of paintings, drawings, and watercolors, Paul Klee (1879–1940) is considered one of the most cerebral and prolific artists of 20th-century European art. Although his works are generally small in scale, they stand out for their complex thought and detailed nuances. His artistic formation was influenced by his early involvement in the German expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter and, in particular, by a trip to Tunisia in 1914, which transformed his use of color. After the war, he taught at the famous Bauhaus school, where his lectures, as well as his emerging practice, emphasized the symbolic potential of shadow, line, and geometry. Klee also drew inspiration from cubism, poetry, music, literature, language, and the sheer power of children's art. Renowned for his simplistic anthropomorphic characters, he often combines the appearance of naive innocence with strict composition and intellectual significance. This book offers a selection of Klee's key works to introduce his style and influence. From sunlit landscapes to enigmatic wordplay, discover a world that is both simple, symbolic, and surprisingly colorful.
