Description & Specifications

The work of Henri Matisse (1869–1954) reflects a steadfast belief in the power of vibrant colors and simple forms. Although he is mainly famous for his paintings, Matisse also worked with drawing, sculpture, lithography, stained glass, and collage, developing his unique medium of cut-outs when old age left him unable to stand and paint. Matisse's subjects were often conventional: nudes, portraits and figures in landscapes, oriental scenes, and interior views, but with his bold use of color and fluid activity of drawing, he secured his position as a master of the 20th century. Matisse’s palette was particularly interesting, as with intense blue, amethyst purple, egg-yellow, and many shades, he freed his work from the careful representation of reality and sought a “living harmony,” often referring to music as a source of inspiration or analogy for his work. This richly illustrated publication includes preparatory studies, full-page illustrations, and detail enlargements. Discover the artist's adventurous path, from the chromatic brilliance of the Fauve period, to the invention of gouache cut-outs at the age of 80. Each image has been carefully reproduced, creating a viewing experience worthy of the exceptional colorist.
