The third volume containing the early legends and myths that led to the writing of Tolkien's epic history, The Silmarillion.
This, the third volume in the History of Middle-earth, provides us with a privileged look into the creation of Middle-earth's mythology, through the alternate verses of two of the most crucial stories in Tolkien's world - those of Turin and Luthien. The first of the poetic verses is the unpublished Lay of The Children of Hurin, which narrates on a grand scale the tragedy of Turin Turambar. The second is the poignant Lay of Leithian, the main source of the story of Beren and Luthien in The Silmarillion, which speaks of the Quest of the Silmaril and the encounter with Morgoth in his underground castle.
Along with the poems, comments on the evolution of the history of the Elder Days are included. Also included is the significant critique of The Lay of Leithian by C.S. Lewis, who read the poem in 1929.
