The first worldwide publication of a previously unknown work by J.R.R. Tolkien, which narrates the epic story of the Norse hero, Sigurd, the dragon-slayer, the revenge of his wife, Gudrun, and the Fall of the Nibelungs.

In the 'Lay of the Völsungs,' the ancestry of the great hero Sigurd, the slayer of Fafnir, the most famous of dragons, whose treasure he made his own, is narrated. It follows the awakening of the Valkyrie Brynhild, who slept surrounded by a wall of fire, and their engagement. Then, he reaches the court of the great princes called the Nibelungs, with whom he enters into a blood brotherhood.

In this court erupts great love but also great hatred, caused by the power of the witch, the mother of the Nibelungs, who is a master in the art of magic, transformation, and forgetfulness potions.

In scenes of dramatic tension, identity confusion, passion cessation, jealousy, and bitter confrontation, the tragedy of Sigurd and Brynhild, Gunnil and Gudrun, his sister, culminates in the end with the murder of Sigurd by his brotherly friends, Brynhild's suicide, and Gudrun's despair. In the 'Lay of Gudrún,' her fate after Sigurd's death is narrated, her marriage against her will to the powerful Atli, ruler of the Huns (Attila of history), the murder of her brothers, the Lords Nibelung, and her gruesome revenge.
