Description

The penultimate book in the acclaimed Malazan Book of the Fallen fantasy series. On the continent of Letherii, the exiled Malazan army, under the command of Adjunct Tavore, begins its march towards the eastern Deserts, to fight for an unknown cause against an unseen enemy. The fate awaiting the Bonehunters is one no soldier can prepare for and one no mortal soul can endure - the adversary is uncertainty and the only weapon worth holding is stubbornness and courage. In war, everyone loses, and this harsh truth can be found in the eyes of every soldier in every realm.

Fates are never simple. Truths are neither clear nor sharp. The stories of Malazan Book of the Fallen draw to a close in a far-off place, under indifferent skies, as the last great army of the Malazan Empire seeks one final battle in the name of redemption. Final questions remain unanswered: can one's actions be heroic when no one is there to see them? Can what goes unseen change the world forever? The answers await the Bonehunters, beyond the Deserts...

Archaeologist and anthropologist Steven Erikson made his fantasy debut with Gardens of the Moon, which was nominated for the World Fantasy Award and introduced fantasy readers to the epic series 'The Malazan Book of the Fallen', which has been praised as 'a fantasy masterwork'. This River Awakens was his first novel, originally published under the name Steve Lundin. Having lived in Cornwall for several years, Steve will return to Canada in the summer of 2012.
