Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro is the new novel by the award-winning author.
The story follows Etsuko, a Japanese woman living alone in England, reflecting on her daughter's recent suicide. Through her memories, she returns to a scorching summer in Nagasaki, when she and her friends were trying to rebuild their lives after the war.
Her friendship with Sachiko, a wealthy woman fallen into vagrancy, adds a subversive dimension to her recollections.
The critique has described the work as "a grim and impeccably structured enigma" (Sunday Times) and "one of the outstanding literary debuts of recent years" (Observer).
The novel is called "a subtle, ironic, and elliptical volume. Its characters are particularly compelling, with what remains being its balance between an epitaph and irony" (New York Times Book Review).
"An extraordinarily good first novel, with themes that are deceptively large and unusually haunting" (Los Angeles Times).
