Description & Specifications

Herodotus' 'History', completed in the second half of the 5th century BC, is generally considered the first work of history and the first great masterpiece of non-fiction. In this translation, Herodotus' dramatic narrative about the Persian invasions of Greece is combined with his endless curiosity, as he explores topics like hemp and the Pyramids, making the book a source of so much factual information about the ancient world. This absorbing translation by Tom Holland, one of Britain's most acclaimed young historians, allows contemporary readers to fully appreciate the drama and mystery of this great work.

Tom Holland is the author of several works, including 'Rubicon: The Triumph and Tragedy of the Roman Republic', which won the Hessell-Tiltman Prize for History, and 'Persian Fire', which won the Runciman Award from the Anglo-Hellenic League in 2006. He has adapted works by Homer, Herodotus, Thucydides, and Virgil for the BBC, and is also the presenter of BBC Radio 4's 'Making History'.

Paul Cartledge is the first A.G. Leventis Professor of Greek Culture at the University of Cambridge, with numerous publications including significant historical works. He is also an honorary citizen of Sparta and holds the Gold Cross of the Order of Honour from the President of the Hellenic Republic.

Tom Holland's translation has been hailed as the best English translation of Herodotus to appear in the last fifty years. His storytelling ability is fully captured in the idiom and drama he uses.
