“The Old Makam,” a concise summary of a voluminous doctoral dissertation, is aimed at those interested in gaining an idea of the theoretical foundations of the external member, that is, our non-church music that was blended with the old secular music of the Byzantines during the Ottoman era.
Its resonance reached the modern Greek world through the folk and urban songs of Asia Minor, as well as the early rebetika, while the current trend has mistakenly fully assigned it to Turkish music.
The foundations for organizing the tonal material, the scales, and the ways of their melodic handling are approached simply in the spirit of the old theoretical writers from the 17th to the 19th century, through a plethora of tables and musical examples, so that they can be understood and utilized from an amateur to a composer.
