The great Renaissance effort of Hellenism after 1700 made it possible to establish the Friendly Society and ignite the Revolution; our freedom, as Dimitris Vikélas emphasizes, was achieved through the "sword" and "incommensurable sacrifices." Although it will be founded by radical elements, spiritual descendants of Rigas Velestiniotis, the success of the Society will rely on the combination of unwavering revolutionary will with the awareness that a national liberation struggle must include all the forces of the nation.
Under the initiative of the diaspora merchants, which already constitutes a historical innovation, sailors, military personnel, local leaders, clergy, Phanariots, and intellectuals will awaken the great masses of the people – primarily the peasantry – ready to receive the message of the Revolution.
However, today, in the context of widespread disappointment that plagues the Greeks, many question the choice of the revolutionary path and argue that it was negative for Hellenism. Nevertheless, would its cancellation have the beneficial consequences that are presumed, or conversely, would it have negative repercussions with uncertain consequences for the future?
In any case, the profound division regarding the strategy to be followed will leave the vision of the Friendly Society for the liberation of all Hellenism unfulfilled. In the book's Appendix, evidence of the revolutionary planning is presented: The "General Plan" concerns the general goals of the revolution, the "Great Plan" involves the organization of an uprising in the missing center, Constantinople, the "Military Plan of Savvas" pertains to the planning in the Balkans, and the declarations of Alexandros Ypsilantis illuminate the ideological directions of the Society.
Original maps and diagrams present the social composition and geographical spread of the Society. Two hundred years after the achievement of the Friendly Society, the Greeks are called either to cancel it, through a fatal regression, or to complete it, primarily intellectually, ideologically, and culturally.
