The expression "New Testament" comes from Jesus Christ himself, who at the Last Supper said: "This is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins" (Matthew 26:28), thus indicating the new era of God's Redemptive economy. This new period for humanity, inaugurated by Christ through His incarnation and sealed with His crucifixion and resurrection, fulfills the promises of the Old Testament, during which the prophets envisioned a new, eternal covenant between God and His people. Jeremiah already prophesies: "Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah..." (Jeremiah 31:31-32). This promise was fulfilled not only for the people of Israel and Judah but for all humanity, which can partake in the benefits of His crucifixion and resurrection.
