The programmatic establishment and operation of ONE school, the neighborhood school, for ALL students without discrimination and exclusion is the demand of the new era. This means the functioning of a school that is Democratic, Human, Social, Free, Friendly, and Flexible with a Multicultural and Digital culture.
The protagonist must be the Student who will participate not only as a invited spectator but also as a partner (stakeholder) at the center of the rapidly occurring changes in education and the daily context in general. In other words, it is about ONE school that is called to provide unified education to ALL students (children and adolescents) in a developing digital Greece, to be open to the local community, and to be inspired by smart ideas and scientific achievements aiming for the acquisition of skills and expanded knowledge on the part of the student.
This is done through the systematic provision of Inclusive or Comprehensive Education. It refers to ONE school that (will) be governed by respect and the service of students' diversity. Such an evolution of the modern Greek school is in line with the Salamanca Declaration in Spain for equal education of individuals with special educational needs.
A Declaration that emerged at a global forum of over 300 delegates from 92 countries and 25 international organizations at the close of the previous century (1994) under the auspices of UNESCO. The emphasis of the undertaken (and unfortunately unsuccessful so far) reform initiatives in education in every socio-economically developed (and developing) country, including Greece and Cyprus, should focus on the definition of a "global agenda" of ambitious actions for each educator in the new school for the qualitative upgrading of their multifaceted work (teaching and supportive).
Its effective impact should (have to) specifically target the psychosocial integration of each student without discrimination and exclusion and the development of skills related to the new era of the magical image, knowledge, and (over)information.
Special Education in 21st-century society condenses a carefully designed system of various techniques and approaches that are complex, social, philosophical, conceptual, and didactic-supportive in nature. It aims at the comprehensive support of ALL children and adolescents with special educational needs, ensuring their attendance at the common neighborhood school and strengthening their social interaction with peers and familiar friends.
This newly revised treatise focusing on Special Education composes an ambitious endeavor of its kind. It aims for a systematic and multiple reading and deepening – clinical, psychological, educational, supportive, research-based, and self-descriptive – of all the groups that make up children and adolescents with special educational needs.
The specific endeavor is placed in the temporal prospect of "2027" because it is viewed as an important programmatic milestone coinciding with the end of the multi-annual Financial Framework of the expanded European Union (2021-2027). The ultimate goal of such an effort is to make the perception and practice dominant in the research and educational platform of scientists and other supporting professionals in the relevant area for ONE single provided education and for ONE school that will inherently be digital and fully equipped to effectively address the diverse needs of each student.
In such a platform, today's engaged and aware educator should consider the attendance of children with special needs in the general school as a CHALLENGE and find the engagement with the WHOLE of their class's students attractive, designing a “global agenda of actions” and looking forward to each individual's diversity. This will begin to give rise to a different school culture in the daily context, worthy of the delicate and intrinsic nature of the child and the adolescent.
And this in stubborn opposition to the prolonged ominous socio-economic and political conditions of the new era, which has recently been burdened by the intensifying refugee-migration crisis in the European context.
