The most important historical source for one of the most powerful leaders of the ancient era, "The Campaigns of Alexander" by Arrian illustrates how Alexander the Great came to rule an extensive empire that he created on his own, translated from the Greek by Aubrey de Sélincourt and revised with an introduction and notes by J.R. Hamilton in the Penguin Classics series.

Although it was written over four hundred years after Alexander's death, Arrian's "The Campaigns of Alexander" is the most reliable account we have of the man and his achievements. His own experience as a military commander provided unique insights into the life of history's greatest conqueror. It recounts the violent suppression of the Theban revolt, the total defeat of Persia, and his campaigns through Egypt, India, and Babylon—founding new cities and destroying others along the way.

While Alexander is portrayed through this narrative as an unparalleled and charismatic leader, Arrian manages to create an objective and complete picture of a man with boundless ambitions, who is exposed to the temptations of power and worshipped as a god during his lifetime.

Aubrey de Sélincourt's vivid translation is accompanied by J.R. Hamilton's introduction, which examines the life and times of Arrian, the composition of other classical sources, and the structure of Alexander's army. This edition also contains appendices, maps, a list for further reading, and a detailed index.

The details of Arrian's life (born 86) are uncertain, though the outline suggests a man of diverse talents. He was governor under the emperor Hadrian, author of a number of non-fiction works, and a citizen of Athens. In 145, he rose to the position of high priest of Athens and thus became part of the city's governing body. The date of his death is unknown.
