This representative selection from the work of one of the most exciting poets of contemporary Greece was created shortly after the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1979. It includes works from all periods of his distinguished career and tracks his evolution from early surrealism, where he transforms the French influence into a distinct personal voice and mythology, to the dramatic style of "Axion Esti" with the mix of spirituality and earthly themes, culminating in his later works where he experiments with new forms of expression for his timeless themes. The poems have been selected, introduced, and primarily translated by the leading translators of modern Greek poetry, Edmund Keeley and the late Philip Sherrard, whose collaborations also include translations of Seferis, Cavafy, and Sikelianos. Other contributors to the book include Giorgos Savvidis, Nanos Valaoritis, and John Stathatos.
