The interest of researchers in the Battle of Marathon remains unwavering. Since the 17th century to the present, a large number of distinguished scholars have addressed the problems presented by this significant chapter in the history of humanity and have proposed solutions for them.

However, these proposals often contradict each other, because the ancient texts on which they are based leave a wide field that favors the creation of various hypotheses and theories. Herodotus, who is the main and most reliable source of the research, provides us with a concise overview of the events and omits some key details regarding the Battle of Marathon.

To fill the gaps and deficiencies of the Herodotean narrative, researchers have relied on secondary sources, which, instead of being used as supportive material, have led some to arbitrary conclusions and turned them into creators of fictional scenarios, as their theories often contradict the main source and sometimes common sense.

In Herodotus, as well as in other sources, there are some words or phrases that, due to misinterpretation, can mislead us. And others that, at first glance, seem to tell us nothing. However, if we examine them closely, we may find that their silence is apparent and that they conceal truths within them, which, in some cases, reveal themselves to us in the most striking way.

In this book, the author presents the various theories that have been formulated, studies the difficulties presented by the topics, and expresses his own opinion, primarily relying on Herodotus's narrative regarding written testimonies. He evaluates and utilizes secondary written sources according to their reliability, insofar as they align with the Herodotean narrative and do not contradict it.
