In 1980, Michalis H. Fotopoulos, along with his wife Maria Fotopoulou, started as amateurs with five beehives in Akrtochori, Messinia. They produced honey for their family's needs and to treat friends and relatives. By 1983, the beehives increased to 200 and were relocated to the region of Messinian Mani and the mountains of Taygetus.

In 1994, their son Charalampos Fotopoulos took over the business after attending beekeeping training seminars. His knowledge, combined with his parents' expertise, forms the secret to their success.

The Fotopoulos beekeeping operation has been certified with ISO 22000:2005 for the production, packaging, and trading of beekeeping products.
