Coincidental? Certainly. In 1985, the former Prime Minister and esteemed philosopher Panagiotis Kanellopoulos gave me the first interview, which would mark the beginning of his biography. Twenty-five years later, the former President of the Republic Kostis Stefanopoulos gives the green light and approval for his own Biography.
Both born and raised in Achaia, each left their mark on the modern political history of the place from their own vantage point. Common characteristics include kindness and stubbornness, ethics and humility, hard work and responsibility. In the same conservative party, always with a self-critical spirit and acknowledgment of errors up to an apology to those they wronged.
I remember nostalgically my meetings with Panagiotis Kanellopoulos in the small office on Akademias Street and at his home on Xenokratous Street. In a similar way, after many years, I would have meetings with Kostis Stefanopoulos. A difficult and solitary man, the former president often surprised me with his sincerity and self-deprecation.
He made no effort to emerge from the pages of this book as a good friend, a good father or husband, a good politician. On the contrary, he did everything wrong. Often the conversation took the form of a "confession," while at other times he became a "sphinx" on issues that could expose other figures.
The reader will have the opportunity, through his narratives, to know a Stefanopoulos that very few know, but also to refresh their memory of political paths, alliances, and intrigues that primarily took place after the transition to democracy. It is my personal need to publicly thank him for the trust he showed me.
And the thanks become double when one considers that his associates and relatives barely get him talking about something that concerns him. And if they observe something and mention it to him, the familiar response will be: "So what?".
