Spyros Matsoukas is one of the most significant yet forgotten figures of the late 19th and early 20th centuries in Greece.
After the unfortunate outcome for Greece of the 1897 war, in which he participated, he decided to dedicate himself to patriotic poetry and put himself at the service of his homeland.
He became a motivator and fighter on the battlefields, but also a national peddler, proclaiming his verses to gather money from the locals and Greeks everywhere to support the fleet and army of his beloved Greece.
The results of his actions, truly admirable, rightfully earned him the title of Ethnapostolos.
