Description & Specifications

In 'THE GEARS OF TIME', an initial attempt is made to record the general history of time measurement and its (positive or negative) contribution to what we call modern civilization.

This is a triptych: a study at the level of cultural history (Why was the mechanical clock invented in Europe?), at the level of the history of science and technology (How did we get from the elementary mechanisms that measured time approximately to high-precision instruments?), and also at the level of social and economic history (Who manufactured these instruments and how, who used them and why?).

The research has led me to new, unexpected paths and directions: on topics such as religion and folklore, mathematics and mechanics, astronomy and navigation; but also in very different places, such as the court of the Great Khan and the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, in the observatories of Renaissance Europe before the discovery of telescopes, in the circles of the scholars of the Old Regime, in the deadly route of the galleons of Manila, in the deafeningly silent disputes about timekeeping at the observatories of Kew, Geneva, and Neuchâtel.

From the cramped and cluttered workshops of the cabinotiers of Geneva and the workshop of a craftsman in the mountainous Neuchâtel to the buildings of factories with countless windows in Waltham, Massachusetts, and Elgin, Illinois, and the miserable clock-making factories of Southeast Asia.
