The Synology RX1217RP expansion unit adds 12 drive bays to compatible Synology RackStation systems. It allows RAID volumes to be expanded without reformatting existing drives, maintaining service continuity. It can also operate as a separate volume and a local backup destination.

It connects to the RackStation using a high-bandwidth expansion cable and uses a SATA 6 Gb/s interface. Hibernation is configured manually, while the unit powers on and off together with the connected RackStation. The redundant power supplies switch over automatically in the event of a failure.
