Description & Specifications

Edward Hopper (1882–1967) is a quintessential example of American success, even if it came at a slow pace. At the age of 40, he was a failed artist struggling to sell a single painting. As he approached 80, Time magazine featured him on its cover. Today, Hopper is regarded as a giant of modern expression, with a unique and memorable sense for mood and place. Many of his works explore the experience of the modern city. In his canvases, he depicts restaurants, cafes, retail stores, traffic lights, gas stations, train stations, and hotel rooms. The scenes are characterized by strong color contrasts and dramatic lighting, as well as sharply defined shapes that seem both part of and alien to their surroundings. The atmosphere in his work is marked by a sense of strange unease, alienation, loneliness, and psychological tension, although his rural or coastal scenes can offer a counterpoint of tranquility or optimism. This edition presents significant works from Hopper's oeuvre to introduce a central player not only in the history of American art but also in the American soul.
