Description

Sir Patrick Leigh Fermor, "Mr. Michalis" to his Maniot friends, is considered the greatest travel writer of our time and a legendary figure who connected his life with Greece.

His wanderings began at the age of 18, in 1933, when instead of pursuing the military career that was intended for him, he crossed the English Channel and started to walk across Europe, headed for Istanbul. Driven by his unquenchable curiosity about the world, he accomplished this mythical feat, facing various trials along the way.

His experiences from this journey are documented in a trilogy that took a lifetime to write. The first volume, The Time of Gifts, describes the journey from the Netherlands to the Hungarian border; the second volume, Between the Woods and the Water, recounts the journey from Budapest to the Iron Gates of the Danube, and the current volume is the third, which completes his pilgrimage and was published after Patrick Leigh Fermor's death, edited by Colin Thubron and Artemis Cooper.

WHAT THEY SAID ABOUT THE BOOK

The Endless Road confirms that Fermor was the greatest travel writer of his generation and places his now complete trilogy among the masterpieces of the genre. It is truly one of the most significant works of English-speaking post-war travel literature.

William Dalrymple, Guardian

Read an excerpt

The Bulgarians themselves, short and sturdy, with rough features and robust, evoked an even more distant past, the wild habitats beyond the Volga from where they had migrated to settle here centuries ago, along with the bloodthirsty Asian hordes. Uncultured and tough, with the same cowhide footwear tied to their feet as the Romanians, they walked along the dusty cobblestone streets like bears. They were dressed in thick and coarse handmade fabrics, sometimes in dark blue but usually earth brown, decorated here and there with black embroidery: wide trousers, cross-over vests, short jackets, and their waists wrapped with a thick purple fabric thirty centimeters wide, in which they sometimes hid knives. On their heads, they wore a flat cap, like the Cossacks, made of brown or black sheep leather.
