Description

Data center decisions are based on TCO. Higher capacity hard drives play a key role in reducing TCO. An 18TB data center HDD provides 29% more capacity than a 14TB HDD of the same form factor. Higher capacity HDDs allow data centers to reduce capital expenditures (CapEx), lowering hardware support and system-level costs compared to lower capacity drives. Helium-sealed, low-power, high-reliability units reduce energy and maintenance costs, contributing to operational expense (OpEx) savings. For example, a data center using 18TB HDD units versus 14TB HDD units may require 22% fewer racks while consuming 21% less power per TB in idle state. This results in a significant overall reduction in TCO for data center environments.

Increase Accuracy with New Technologies

The Ultrastar DC HC550 unit incorporates a range of technologies on a 9-disk platform to create a new category of HDD hard drives. The 18TB capacity is achieved by combining technologies that enhance space density along with technologies that improve performance and reduce power consumption.

Features

  • The first HDD hard drive in the industry to leverage electrically assisted magnetic recording (EAMR) technology improves write capability and thus increases space density.
  • The industry's first three-stage actuator (TSA) improves head positioning accuracy, providing even better performance and increased space density.
  • HelioSeal® technology is the foundation for Western Digital's high-capacity HDD hard drives and is the 6th generation of the HelioSeal product. To date, Western Digital has shipped >65 million HelioSeal products.

Excellent product. Huge storage space and I believe a good choice for Value for Gb. Helium. It made my life easier in a NAS array of 6 of these, where I had to replace one. Its predecessors lasted 4 years with restarts you can count on one hand. As for the noise, at least inside the NAS, I have no comments because it is barely audible.

Excellent, the maximum speed I have seen is 180 mb/s.
It is not silent but not at a level that bothers.
I will definitely choose it again if I need to buy it again

I chose this specific disk to cover my backup needs.
The first disk that came into my hands was buzzing terribly to the point where you could tell something was very wrong.
After replacement, the second disk from a different store is recognized but not formatted.
They were tested on 2 different computers that support them in the BIOS and also on a NAS workstation, unsuccessfully.
Defective batch? Poor cooperation between WD and Hitachi? Since it is a hybrid disk with a sun inside. Who knows. Construction-wise, it seems that the disk is stacked to the limits, there is no breathing room, and it requires careful installation.
The paradox is that we are talking about a NAS model with warranties and construction for 24/7 use, and strangely, neither of the two ever worked... right from the start.
Would I try buying a 3rd WD after this ordeal?
    NO.
    What about you?

3x18tb 6 months in a qnap nas, running 24/7. All good, the "clanking" sound the heads make I consider a plus, it reminds me of the good old days, and it's normal for this kind of drives.
My old wd red 4tb are approaching 9 years of operation (4x5 in raid 5) and are still flawless, I expect nothing less from the new ones. I will update in a few months.
    Update 28/5/2023
All good, I added another one to the raid. I will keep updating periodically.

Update 8/1/2024: All Ok. As soon as their price drops a bit more I will set up another RAID.

Update 5/1/2026: All OK. But the price is not dropping, so we're going for Toshiba MG for the next NAS.

Awesome disk. I plugged it in via SATA3 cable on the motherboard and power from the Seasonic 1200W Platinum power supply (overkill). It was immediately recognized without the need for any separate cable. With Hard Disk Sentinel, it has a Power On Time of almost 45 days so far. Good temperatures. I hope I won't cry bitter tears over my files at some point.
