You may find it useful to use a walking stick if you have a small problem with balance or instability, some weakness in your leg or trunk, if you suffer from an injury, or some pain.

If you are elderly, a single-point support walking stick may help you to continue living independently.

• Determining the correct position: The top of your walking stick should reach your wrist when you stand upright. Your elbow should bend slightly when you hold the stick in your hand. Hold the stick with the hand opposite the side that needs support.
• Walking: When you walk, the stick and your injured leg should swing and touch the ground at the same time. To start, place your stick slightly in front of your foot and step with your injured leg.
• Stairs: To go up the stairs, hold onto the railing (if possible) and support yourself on your good leg first, with your stick in the hand opposite the injured leg. Then, bring up the injured leg.
• Space arrangement: Remove rugs, electrical cords, avoid wet floors, and anything else that might cause you to fall.
