In the end, we feel that he comes to teach us something important that he probably did not have exactly in mind: the example he lived, influenced, and describes, grand as it is in terms of stakes, is in its realization an example not to be emulated, but to be avoided!

In other words, the famous aphorism by Kropotkin about the Bolsheviks applies here as well: "They showed us how a revolution should not be made."
