Summary
The deification of lyrical art: words and music intertwine in a dark song about the earthly adventure of man, about mortality. Rilke becomes Orpheus and sings his own Eurydice, a young dancer who died from leukemia at the very moment when her talent became high art.
But the "Sonnets to Orpheus" are poems of descent into Hades that the poet essentially sends to himself. Did he sense his shared fate with the prematurely lost artist? Did he experience an existential deadlock with the announcement of her death? Did his mind become clouded realizing in its absolute form the roiling vortex of life's transformations that undermine from the very beginning the "earthbound human being"?
His answer is given to us in 55 sonnets that constitute a single poem: there the rhythm elevates even to arrhythmia the normally rhythmic verses, and the metrical lines harmonize even with metric idiosyncrasies and violations.
