Description

Among the most emblematic figures of the Greek Revolution is undoubtedly Petrompeis Mavromichalis. Holding high offices, such as the bey of Mani during the pre-revolutionary years, the president of the Executive Authority, and the commander-in-chief of the Peloponnesian forces during the struggle, Mavromichalis played a significant role in the national and political emancipation of the Greeks from Ottoman rule.

He did not hesitate to criticize the rebelling Greeks for their stance during the civil wars, emphasizing the need for their unification to achieve independence. Despite being one of the first supporters of Ioannis Kapodistrias, he opposed the Governor's measures aimed at limiting the power of the traditional elites of the country, coming into conflict with him.

The assassination of the governor by the relatives of Petrompeis tarnished his family's image among the Greeks, a fact that continues to obstruct the universal recognition of his contribution to the War of Independence to this day.

A FEW WORDS ABOUT THE SERIES

The Greek Revolution is rightly classified among the great revolutions that marked the age of Modernity. The completion of two hundred years since its outbreak has understandably heightened the interest of modern Greeks to learn about its key characteristics. This new series aims in that direction.

By portraying the portraits of five of the leading figures of the Greek Revolution (Theodoros Kolokotronis, Ioannis Kapodistrias, Petrompeis Mavromichalis, Rigas Feraios, Bouboulina) and analyzing five of the main themes related to it (The plan and outbreak of the Revolution, The constitutions of the Struggle, Internal conflicts and disputes, From the Chios Massacre to the Exodus of Messolonghi, The role of the Great Powers in the Revolution), it aspires to contribute to public history and the dialogue about the character and forms of the regeneration of the Greeks. The volumes of the series are authored by distinguished historians and specialists, following the rules of scientific research.

On the morning of the next day, September 27th, Ioannis Kapodistrias, following his usual Sunday routine, set out for the Church of Saint Spyridon in Nafplio to attend the Divine Liturgy. On his way to the church, he saw Georgios and Konstantinos Mavromichalis standing to the left and right of the main gate, blocking his entrance. For a moment, he hesitated, recalling the warnings from his close associates about rumors that some opposition members intended to assassinate him. Almost immediately, however, he decided not to retreat at the sight of the two men and continued on his way. When the Governor reached the entrance of the church, the two Mavromichalis men made their move. Konstantinos shot the Governor in the head, while Georgios stabbed him in the abdomen. Ioannis Kapodistrias's death was instantaneous.
