The speaking tracheostomy tube is useful in cases where the vocal cords are intact, to divert exhalation towards the oral cavity and enable speech. The tracheostomy tube can be plastic or silver, with or without an air chamber (cuff).

Tracheostomy is called the surgical opening of the trachea and the placement of a special tube within it, for the purpose of ventilating the patient, bypassing the upper respiratory tract. It is the artificial opening in the anterior wall of the trachea below the cricoid cartilage, between the 2nd-3rd cartilage. The tracheostomy tube is the most essential tool in the daily life of patients with a tracheostomy. Depending on the case, the use of a different type of tracheostomy tube is recommended. The tube's duration can be temporary or permanent. It is important for the patient and their relatives to have a general knowledge to use them correctly and maintain them in the best possible condition.

Balloon or cuff: It is not present in all tracheostomies. When inflated, it serves to hold the tube in place and prevent air from escaping to the oropharynx (e.g., in the case of mechanical ventilation). It is connected via a thin tube to an external pilot balloon, which indicates whether the inner balloon is inflated. As a rule, patients with tracheostomy in the ward should have the balloon deflated. The balloon is inflated or deflated only on a doctor's order.
