Description

Description

This book was first published in 1998. It is an original and systematic study of the image of the Other during periods of crisis and war, and it raises the issue of the limits of representation using the example of the genocide of the Jews.

It examines issues related to the reception and literary representation of war and the genocide of the Jews. The image of the Jew in international and Greek literature is explored in relation to historical, social, and literary contexts. An iconological analysis of works of fiction from the period 1945-2010 about the genocide of the Jews is attempted.

A methodological proposal for investigating the image of the Other in literature is also presented, aiming to be useful more generally for the study of the image of the foreigner. In its new edition, a section has been added concerning the image of the Jew in cinema, both foreign and Greek, from the early 20th century to 2015, with an emphasis on films about the Holocaust.

“The book by Ampatzopoulou is the most comprehensive work we have so far on the theme of the Other and its persecution, as well as an essay in comparative literature with extensive information and exemplary use of new methods of analysis.” Dimitris Raftopoulos, Eleftherotypia – Library, 5/2/1999

“I believe that the approach of Franki Ampatzopoulou presents particularly great interest for historians, as it insists on describing the terms under which the discourse of art meets other discourses, such as politics or science [...] The sensitivity and erudition of F.A. have created an important book.” Rika Benveniste, Contemporary Issues, 7/1998-3/1999
