In the summer of 2001, I went on vacation with my family and some of our friends in northern Crete, not far from Agios Nikolaos. Most summers we came to Greece for holidays, with the specific destination being randomly chosen by our friends. That year we stayed in a complex of rental apartments, with basic facilities and a pool shaped very awkwardly like Crete. The recurring pattern of the holidays was to spend the mornings at the beach and then visit some attraction in the afternoon. By the end of the first week, we had visited all the archaeological sites scattered around the area, as well as every possible museum. Among them was an entire museum dedicated to the iris flower and its historical uses in dyeing yarns and fabrics. I liked all the museums, but, as was probably expected, my children were not enthusiastic (especially about the last museum). They were ten and eight years old at the time, respectively, and complained that they wanted to spend their whole day playing on the beach.
