Description & Specifications

“She vanished…” When John Rebus's daughter Samantha calls him at midnight, he knows the news is not good. Her husband has been missing for the last two days. Rebus fears the worst – and he knows all too well from his many years in the police that his daughter will be the prime suspect.

He wasn’t the best father – his job always took priority – but now his daughter needs him more than ever. But should he go as a father or as a detective? As he departs at dawn for the wind-swept coast – and a small town with big secrets – he wonders if this might be the first time in his life that he doesn’t want to discover the truth...

A legendary storyteller at his best, in one of the most anticipated releases of the year.

Read an excerpt

Rebus had forgotten how long the journey was. The distance was about four hundred kilometers, and he would have sworn he had done it in less than four hours in the past. Today, however, it took over five, with only one stop to refuel the car and the driver, during which he gave a reassuring pat on the hood of the Saab to show his appreciation for its effort. The situation on A9 road was not so bad under the given conditions – only a few trucks and caravans and construction work at two points. The construction of a median strip was still ongoing – it would continue even after Rebus had taken the traffic-free highway to the sky. He hadn’t thought to bring anything with him. There was only one CD in the car, a collection of songs that Sivon had written for him. On it, she had written in black marker "Songs for Difficult Times." He had asked her to explain the title.
