Ichigo Kurosaki was a young boy when his mother died. On a rainy day, Ichigo, whose ability to see ghosts is both a blessing and a curse, tried to save a girl from drowning in a nearby river. His mother, Masaki, ran after them trying to save her only son. Then everything went dark, and Ichigo woke up to find his mother dead and the girl gone.

It is the anniversary of Masaki's death, and the entire Kurosaki family, along with the former Soul Reaper, Rukia Kuchiki, go to the cemetery to honor her memory. Ichigo soon finds himself face to face with Grand Fisher, the Hollow who may be responsible for his mother's death.
