In In Silencio, all players form a team that cannot communicate with each other. Each player starts with a handful of cards in four colors, and the team's goal is to discard as many cards as possible. However, each card played must have a higher value than the previous card played of the same color.
If the card played is the immediate successor of the last card of that color, then the card is oriented to show its dark side, and the penalty from that card is applied. For example, the green penalty forces the next card played to be green, while the blue penalty requires you to give another player one of the face-up cards available from the Oracle.
If the card played is not the immediate successor of the last card of that color, then you place the card face-up and you can take the bonus depicted on that side of the card, such as ignoring the next penalty or placing one of your cards face-up in front of you so someone can play it.
There are five shrines in the game — one multicolored shrine and one shrine for each color — and before or after your card move for the round, you can choose to flip a shrine to use the bonus of that color.
If you cannot play or have no cards in your hand, you must pass, and if all players pass in turn, the game ends. Your score is based on the number of cards in all players' hands, with 0 being the best possible score. If the game seems difficult, you can include the tavern card, which a few times in each game allows a player to give limited information about their hand, while if it is too easy, you can remove some or all of the shrines to eliminate the "extra" bonuses.
