The "Reinforced Concrete" (R.C.) is primarily used as a structural material in our country but presents many peculiarities. It is a heterogeneous material composed of two components: concrete and steel, which work together through adhesion; however, concrete often cracks lawfully. Concrete is a biphasic material whose properties change over time: during the production phase, it is fluid, while after it is cast into a mold, it transitions into the solid phase.
Even after hardening, the properties of concrete continue to change: mechanical characteristics vary, creep increases deformations, and environmental factors affect durability. From the broad technological spectrum related to R.C., this book primarily aims at understanding the behavior and functioning of R.C. Specifically, it emphasizes the design and control of elements made from reinforced concrete.
Inevitably, references are made to the current regulations, mainly the Eurocodes, but this arises from the understanding of the mechanical behavior of the material and the justification of the relevant provisions. This book does not constitute a thorough presentation of the R.C. code; after all, regulations are constantly changing, incorporating new knowledge.
The theoretical part is supplemented with a series of extensive exercises, problems, and examination topics, which will aid in understanding the theory and in consolidating the methods of design and control of structural elements made from R.C.
The book reflects the content of the introductory course on Reinforced Concrete as taught in recent years at the School of Civil Engineering of NTUA, thus primarily addressing students who come into contact with the subject for the first time, as well as professional Civil Engineers who would like to verify certain results arising from design through computer programs "manually."
Thanks are expressed to my teachers and colleagues at the Reinforced Concrete Laboratory, whose collaboration shaped the content of the concrete courses taught at the School of Civil Engineering of the Polytechnic University.
