This work covers the material of Penitentiary Law and includes the essential knowledge areas of Penitentiary Science.
Specifically, after some introductory concepts and observations, it examines the epistemology of prisons, the penitentiary systems, and provides a brief overview of the main penitentiary events that took place during the 19th century.
Next, the author discusses prisons and detention facilities within the Greek institutional framework, reaching up to the end of the 20th century with Law 2776/1999 (Penitentiary Code).
Subsequently, the purposes of the execution of sentences against freedom (deterrent prevention, incapacitation, reintegration of inmates), the general principles of the existing penitentiary law, the law of penitentiary personnel, the institution of transfers, the problem of overcrowding of inmates, and private prisons are examined.
The work is complemented by the introductory report of Law 2776/1999 and the report on the state of Greek prisons and the possibilities for improving the penitentiary system.
